SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS PARTNERSHIP

The Federal Safe Routes to School Program provides funding for plans that enable elementary and middle school students to walk or pedal safely to school.  These plans include infrastructure (engineering) projects and non-infrastructure (education, encouragement, enforcement) programs.

The Louisiana Partnership is here to encourage safe routes to schools in Louisiana. The Partnership connects advocacy groups, government agencies, and other leaders to promote safe routes to school within the state with a twofold objective:

  • To assist cities, parishes, MPO’s, and school agencies to prepare applications for federal SRTS funds and implement SRTS projects
  • To assist with SRTS policy development

Our ultimate aim is to significantly increase the number of students walking and pedaling safely to school.

VISUALIZING A NEW ORLEANS WITH SAFE ROUTES TO SCHOOLS
If every school in New Orleans were buffered by half a mile of pedestrian and bicycle-friendly roadways, this would create a safe environment for bicyclists and pedestrians across the city. This brief video slideshow illustrates this point.
